How to Chewse Your Dog Chew

Dec 4, 2025
Hey furriends, it's Moose here. My mum Sian is Kazoo's WA sales rep, and she knows everything there is to know about treats! And me... well, I know everything there is to know about eating them.

Mum and I decided to put together this supaw helpful guide to chewsing the right treats fur your pup, so you can get the most out of your training, teething and enrichment time.

So here's the thing... not all chews are created equal. Some are soft little snacks that vanish in seconds, while others are big, gnarly challenges that keep pups busy for ages.

To help you pick the right match for your dog, we came up with the Kazoo Jaws Score. It is our chew-ability scale that runs from 1 to 5 and helps you work out whether your dog needs something quick and easy, or tough and long-lasting.

A score of 1 is soft and gentle. A score of 5 is built tough for power chewers. Everything in between covers the everyday snackers, the steady munchers, and the cheeky in-betweeners. Here is how the scale works, with some of the tasty Prime Cuts that fit into each level.

Jaw Score 1: Soft and Simple

These are easy snacks, perfect for puppies, seniors, or dogs that like their treats on the gentle side. Think Chicken Breast, Sardines, Lamb Lung Crisps, or Liver Chips. They are soft, easy to break apart, and great for training sessions or quick rewards. Most dogs will make short work of these! Now you see it... now I CHOMP!

Jaw Score 2: A Little More Bite

For dogs who want a bit more chew but are not ready for the tough stuff yet, options like Beef Steak Strips or Kangaroo Steak Strips hit the spot here. They are a step up from soft treats without being too much hard work.

They're the pawfect choice for a quick post-walkies treat, a meal topper, or an inticing addition to a lick mat or enrichment toy.

Jaw Score 3: Chewy Fun

This is where things get nice and chewy. Perfect for dogs who enjoy a good gnaw... but are not quite power chewers. Puffy Pig Snouts, Cow Ears, or Pig Ears are the kind of snacks that fall into this group. They give jaws something to do and keep pups entertained longer than the softer treats.

They're a pawsome choice for smaller dogs who gobble down treats, because we'll have to pawse and give this a bit more of a nibble before it disappears.

Jaw Score 4: The Serious Workout

Okay now, we're talking tough! These are the chews that last longer and give jaws a proper workout. Roo Tendons, Beef Tendons, and Braided Beef Sticks are favourites at this level. Not only are they satisfying, but they also help clean teeth and gums as your dog works away at them.

Pop one of these tasty chews into a treat holder or enrichment ball to extend your chomp time, and give your paws something easy to hold on to!

Jaw Score 5: Built for Power Chewers

For the dogs that live to chew, this is the top of the scale. These treats are big, tough, and designed to last. Bull Chews, Kangaroo Tails, and Pork Bones are some of the heavy hitters here. Perfect for keeping strong jaws busy and happy. Pawsonally, I love these for those long days when mum is staring at her computer, instead of staring at me (how boring for her!). They keep me entertained and stop me from flying around the house like a tiny, bored, tornado.

Chewing is not just about fun. It is also great for dental health, mental stimulation, and satisfying natural instincts. Every dog has their own chewing style, so if yours likes to swallow treats quickly, it is best to go for larger chews and keep an eye on them while they enjoy it.

Once a chew gets a bit too small, you can swap it out for a fresh one. A little supervision keeps treat time safe and happy, and with the Jaw Score to guide you, it is easy to find the right Prime Cuts chew for your dog.
